Reflecting of GE 555 Computers in Curriculum

This was my very first online course and I must say I got a lot from it. At first I considered myself to be a in-class type of student. But during this fall with record gas prices it became a reasonable option. I learned a lot more than anticipated, and when we did me it was a very enjoyable learning experience.

Professor Luongo made the class interesting and fun. My classmates offered varied standpoints and a plethora of information which I and many other can now use. I would recommend Prof. L course. From the webquest, web presentation, online assessments and blogging it was a unique experience.

Web-Based Educational Resources

Web-Based educational resources are site that help enhance the learning process. They offer many items, facts, articles, or videos. Teacher and parents alike may purchase textbooks, workbooks, games, puzzles for content reinforcement of a particular subject.
If a student have a particular learning style whether it visual, auditory, and tactile. A parent or teacher can compliment that style with tools such as videos, cassettes, cds, and dvds. Most educaitonal websites offer an introductory streaming video to a subject or topic. These sites are found from respectable companies like: PBS, Discovery, History Channel, and National Geographic.

Educational Software or Hardware Issues

This is my second time typing this blog so please bear with me... and don't even ask about autosave...

First, GradeKeeper is a program that was introduced to me my second year of teaching. It allows the all three parties, (teacher, parent, and student) to observe the grading process of assessments, homework, projects, and participation. This is a very objective program which accurately and unbiasly grade students. Even though there are now cheaper and very accessibe alternatives available. It set the idea and concept I feel that are now emulated by many.

Highly recommended.****

Secondly, Study Island is a program adopted by the district and utilized by teachers. Students are given an opportunity to gauge the knowledge on an array of subjects and topics. Teachers can print worksheets, create activities and formulate projects. The assignments can be done on any computer via internet connection. A teacher can target a student's or classes weakness while supplementing their strengths.

Very recommended.***

Internet Safety I & II

The video that was viewed stressed the importance of releasing and disclosing personal information. It was shown that with relatively very little information an individual can locate you vicinity and even street address. The first video talks about a girl who traveled cross country to meet with a stranger who later abducted and abused her.

Privacy is a very viable and lurking topic to discuss. Identity theft and fraudulent crimes are one of the fastest crimes on the rise not only in our state but throughout our nation. Being aware and mindful of what is being told, typed or texted to who is a very serious matter.

That second video was CREEPY (with that SAW music in the background). That seems all to possible; I think that is what makes it so frighting. Parents should definately have a level of control over who their child is talking to and when. Which should consist of passwords, timers, blocks, and even a recording of their conversations.
And if the kid talks about privacy and respect...hit'em with the ol'..."when you start paying rent, that's when you could lock doors and chat to whoever you want...not under my roof, shoot."

DK (Digital Kids)

Ok... here's my first blog...

DK (Digital Kids) Learning in the New Digital Landscape
This article really make alot a sense to me as an eighties baby and as a teacher. Life is definately different than it was 20-30 years ago; even 10-15 years ago. Culture, education, and technology are a few of the major landscape of society that has vastly altered.
This article talks about the difference in todays children and the way they learn. Life then was predictable and low tech. Communication was basic and limited to letters, postcards, and rotary phones. Information resided in two place: an encyclopedia and a place called a L-I-B-R-A-R-Y. Where research was an arduous and laborious task.
I'm not even going to mention the thousands of hours spent on the phone, computer, video games, and tv.
The terms (DSL) Digital as a Second Language and Digital Immigrant also stood out from the article. These terms illustrate the lack of knowledge and application of todays new technology. Jukes declares that an effort should be made to bridge the gap between Digital Native and the Digital Immigrant.
